1 Abstract

Dietary patterns, food supply, and child growth were studied in a village in Niger. The goals and activities of a project for rural development of the village were analysed from a nutritional point of view.

The weight development of the children was normal from zero to the age of six months. In the period between eight and eighteen months their weight stagnated and after that it increased again, but now far below the average.

The supply of food was studied and a compilation of the plants that produce food and their use was made. Millet is the main ingredient in the food. There are a number of local fruits.

Food and consumption patterns for whole households were studied through a 24-hour recall method. Fura, a gruel which is considered a national dish and which is based on millet or sorghum, was present at nearly every meal. Beyond that, paste dipped in sauce is the most common dish. Leaves from plants is an essential part of the food.

Certain analyses of nutritional values were made for fura and for one common food ingredient. The possibilities for making analyses in the country are very limited. Those possibilities should be improved.

The rural development project PTV was studied, and the study gave a positive picture of goals and activities.
